Turboexpander-Dynamometer/Oil Brake

A turboexpander-dynamometer, also known as an expander-dyno/oil brake, is a high-speed machine composed of an expander stage loaded by an oil brake, instead of a compressor or generator. The power generated by the expander is dissipated as heat in the oil brake, supported by a lube oil system that provides cooling and bearing lubrication.

Why choose a Turboexpander-Dyno/Oil Brake?
In some applications, an expander is used to achieve maximum refrigeration in a low-flow process stream. The potential energy recovered from the gas expansion is not enough to justify the investment of an attached generator, or it may not be feasible to attach a compressor. A turboexpander-dyno configuration is the best solution. The energy is absorbed by the dyno wheel rotating in oil and the heat being generated from this activity is dissipated through a cooler.

Benefits of an Expander-Dyno/Oil Brake
More efficient than a JT Valve when there isn’t enough power to justify use of a compressor or generator as the loading device.

LAT is an agile and responsive company with complete control over the design to delivery timeframes for both new equipment and aftermarket projects. From concept to commissioning, L.A. Turbine controls and manages the entire design, engineering, fabrication, assembly and testing process for all projects in its Valencia, CA manufacturing facility. Plus, since all manufacturing and testing is done in-house, customers receive a fully assembled and tested turboexpander unit ready for installation and commissioning upon delivery. Other OEM manufacturers often take possession of outsourced equipment and assemble it for the first time at the customer site. This approach requires additional testing and lengthens the turboexpander commissioning process.

Since 2003, L.A. Turbine (LAT) has proven to be the go-to aftermarket service provider for all OEM makes, models and brands of turboexpanders. As a single-source provider, LAT performs all in-house engineering, design, manufacturing, assembly and testing under one roof. The FX-TURBO Team of aftermarket turboexpander specialists address equipment repair, redesign, upgrades and spare parts production for LAT and non-LAT turboexpander brands. In addition, a global FX-TURBO Field Service Team provides troubleshooting, maintenance and emergency support 24/7/365 either via +1 855 FX-TURBO (+1 855 398 8726) or on-site visits.
