Learn how 10 years of operational and environmental challenges including ongoing hirth coupling failure, intense heat, high vibration, interference of electrical current and power limitations were overcome when advanced methods in root cause analysis, high accuracy machining technology and a new shaft-wheel attachment design were applied to a high horse power expander-generator unit in a geothermal power plant.  This case study reviews the design of a turboexpander-generator unit, presents findings from failure root cause analysis, and elaborates on applied solutions.  Future guidelines on how to prevent problems in similar designs are also discussed.
